Blueberry Infused Vodka

As soon as I saw the post on The Kitchn about infusing vodka with fruit, I knew I had to try it. Vodka is my spirit of choice, and usually for flavored varieties I buy Smirnoff, but I wanted to try my own.

I opted to get 80 proof 5 O’Clock vodka – the super cheap, bottom shelf, $6 plastic bottle kind – because my palette is not nearly sophisticated enough to discern the differences between vodkas, and I figured that after being infused with fruit and mixed into a cocktail that I wouldn’t be able to tell the difference.

The choice of blueberry was really just because I had left over frozen blueberries from a previous recipe. So, I thawed them out and got to work!

Strawberry Shortcake with Maine Strawberries

This past weekend my husband was away on a business trip. Rather than sit at home and pine away for him, I decided to take myself and the kitties on a little vacation. I didn’t go far – just a couple hours up the coast to my hometown – but it’s really amazing what a difference it makes. Around here there’s lots of farm stands with fresh produce, so this week’s recipe features local Maine strawberries and a decades old Betty Crocker biscuit recipe to form a delicious strawberry shortcake.
